Who are we and what do we do?

We are the University of York Clay Pigeon Shooting Club. An ever-growing community of students and alumni which share a passion for Clay Pigeon Shooting. Whether you've been shooting for years, or have never held a gun in your life, there's a place for you in our club.

Every week two shoots are held, one on Wednesday afternoon and the other on Saturday morning. The style of shooting is varied between; skeet, DTL and sporting, giving you a chance to find your niche!

Why is clay pigeon shooting the sport for me?

Clay pigeon shooting is a sport requiring; discipline, focus, and skill. By joining our club you will be able to develop these and reach your true shooting potential. You can have support from more advanced members and most importantly have fun! The first time you hit a target you'll be hooked for life.

What If I've never shot before?

If you've never shot before then that's not a problem. You will be given the tuition you need from more experienced members free of charge. University is a brilliant place to begin shooting as it is unlikely you will find free tuition in the future!

We will provide you with a gun, cartridges, transport and clay pigeons. All you need to provide is yourself and the enthusiasm to learn.

What if I don't have a gun?

The club now has four guns that can be used by any member on shoot days. If you have shot before and would like to request a specific gun then please send us an email so that it can be arranged. Each one is different, so you'll find one that suits you!

When can I start and what should I wear?

page. You can ask us any questions that you may have about the sport or our club. Once you get in contact with us we will Contact us. If you're interested in joining the club then please feel free to contact us. Details can be found on our endeavor to reply as soon as possible and have you signed up ready to shoot!

Like with any other outdoor sport, the British weather never fails to make it a challenge. In the winter period, we strongly suggest bringing; warm clothing, a waterproof and perhaps a hat + gloves. In the summer; sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap are recommended.

No matter what time of year it is, shooting grounds tend to have uneven surfaces. Walking boots or wellies are best (although your trainers will do!). High heels cannot be worn due to safety considerations. We would also ask that long hair is tied back to avoid catching the guns moving parts and do not recommend scarves for similar reasoning.

It is a safety requirement to wear both eye and ear protection on the shooting grounds. You may bring your own or we can always provide you with disposable ear protection and some safety glasses.

How much does shooting cost?

As a sports club at the University of York, we charge £15 membership for the entire year. The low cost (due to support from the Student Union) makes the university an ideal place to start.

You'll also need to pay for each session you attend:

  • For 25 cartridges -  £16*

  • For 50 cartridges - £26*

*This price includes club gun hire, cartridges, clays and transport between the shooting ground and university campus. It also includes safety glasses and disposable ear protection.
